GoGreenSalt in the Netherlands is a type of environmentally friendly de-icing salt made from a mixture of 75% traditional rock salt and 25% olivine. This olivine-enhanced salt absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere as it reacts with water, converting it to calcium, which helps combat acidification and reduces the growth of algae and green deposits on surfaces.

Composition:

It is a blend of 75% regular road salt and 25% greenSand olivine.

Function:

Like regular salt, it melts ice and prevents frost, but its olivine component also provides a slower, more sustained release of the salt.

Environmental Benefits:

  • CO2 Absorption: When exposed to water, the olivine in the salt removes CO2 from the air, a process that helps to reduce atmospheric carbon.
  • Reduced Greening: The resulting calcium helps to prevent the buildup of green slime (groenaanslag) and blue-green algae (blauwalg) on roads and surfaces.

It is used for combating road slipperiness in winter conditions, with over 25 municipalities in the Netherlands already using it.

GoGreenSalt is recognized for its contribution to environmental sustainability and has a low Material Impact (MKI) score.
