Inspired by the ancient foundations that have supported cities like Venice for over a millennium, Underground Forest is pioneering a revolutionary method of permanent carbon removal. The company transforms the very ground beneath our feet into a vast carbon sink by driving sustainably sourced spruce logs deep into the oxygen-free layers of Dutch peat and clay. This simple yet profound technique halts the natural decay process, locking away the carbon captured by the trees for thousands of years. Founded by Kees de Gruiter in 2023, this initiative revives a time-tested building practice, turning the construction of new homes and infrastructure from a major source of emissions into a powerful climate solution.

Underground Forest offers a unique dual benefit: permanently sequestering CO2 while simultaneously stabilizing vulnerable soils in delta regions. By replacing carbon-intensive concrete piles with wooden ones, the project enables "Carbon Negative Construction," a paradigm shift for an industry responsible for nearly 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The income from carbon removal certificates makes this sustainable choice economically competitive, empowering developers and architects to build a better future. Beyond buildings, the technique supports vital infrastructure and even aids in peatland restoration, preventing further carbon release from oxidizing soils.

This is not just a concept; it is a scalable, verifiable, and permanent solution already in action. With the potential to store 20 megatons of CO2 and provide foundations for over 40,000 homes on just 1,000 hectares, the vision is immense. By creating a seamless partnership from the forest to the foundation, Underground Forest is building the future on the wisdom of the past, proving that the most innovative climate solutions can be found right under our feet, and in our cities.
