Located near Mazunte in Oaxaca, Mexico, Piedra Azul is a 3.38 ha regenerative agroforestry initiative dedicated to reversing land degradation. The project is a complex, multi-layered food forest that combines fruit trees, shrubs, and perennial crops.
Utilizing principles from Syntropic Agroforestry and the Soil Food Web, the system is designed to enhance water retention, soil fertility, and biodiversity. As agroforestry falls outside Mexico’s current National Determined Contributions (NDCs), this project offers clear additionality with negligible risk of double counting. Beyond carbon, the project fosters a thriving ecosystem that supports pollinators, soil fauna, and community well-being.
Piedra Azul is a regenerative ranch and community hub founded by Kareem Kouddous with the mission of building climate resilience and food security in coastal Oaxaca. Blending permaculture design with holistic land management, the ranch operates as a living laboratory for restoring local livelihoods and ecosystems.
The team employs advanced restorative practices, including rotational grazing, bio-complete composting, and microscopic soil analysis, to minimise external inputs and maximise soil health. Piedra Azul aims to serve as a replicable model for tropical stewardship, proving that small-scale, biodiverse systems can effectively remove atmospheric carbon while producing nutrient-dense food and regenerating degraded soils.
