Gillis Klompe's arable farm on Schouwen-Duiveland stands as a prime example of how climate adaptation and regenerative agriculture can be successfully integrated. Situated in a region increasingly affected by drought and salinization, Gillis and his business partner Frans cultivate a diverse mix of seed potatoes, onions, sugar beets, cereals, and pulses. However, growing conditions are becoming more challenging due to rising sea levels and prolonged dry spells, which threaten both crop yields and soil health. In response, Gillis has embarked on a long-term transition toward regenerative farming, aiming to fully integrate these principles within 10 years to reduce dependence on external inputs and unpredictable weather.

To achieve his vision, Gillis has already taken several significant steps. He's retired water-intensive crops like sprouts, planted green manures to build organic matter, and experimented with level-controlled drainage to retain freshwater and combat saline intrusion. The farm is also an active participant in the Living Lab Schouwen-Duiveland, a regional initiative focused on testing innovative water management solutions. Beyond these agronomic changes, Gillis is also addressing the long-term sustainability of the farm itself, seeking fair and sustainable ways to pass it on to the next generation, with carbon farming playing a crucial role in this transformation.

By improving soil structure and organic matter content, Gillis is not only storing more CO₂ in his fields but also making his farm more resilient to future climate extremes. This comprehensive approach, linking water management, soil health, and carbon sequestration, demonstrates how climate challenges can indeed catalyze positive change. With a clear regenerative mission and a contagious green ambition, Gillis Klompe is determined to make his farm both climate-resilient and future-proof, ensuring long-term value for the wider farming community.
