This project involves the cultivation of Paulownia trees on a 15,240 m² farmland plot in Heeze, North Brabant. Paulownia is a fast-growing tree known for its exceptional CO₂ absorption, lightweight and stable wood, and nectar-rich purple flowers. Beyond carbon capture and local sustainable timber production, the project also enhances soil quality, boosts biodiversity, and improves air quality. Paulownia’s strong root systems enhance soil structure and water retention, while their large leaves help filter harmful particles from the air. No pesticides are used, and the integration of fruit and nut trees further enriches the ecological value of the site.
Finn Verhoeff, a 19-year-old with a deep passion for nature, leads the project. After earning his propaedeutic diploma in Forest and Nature Management, Finn, inspired by his background with two biologist parents, started growing Paulownia trees together with family and friends. Every tree has been hand-planted with minimal machinery use, ensuring low environmental impact. Finn's approach is fully pesticide-free and prioritizes respect for natural processes. The site is already home to local wildlife such as wild boar, deer, rabbits, and foxes. Future plans include installing beehives and continuing biodiversity research together with his mother, a scientist.
The Paulownia project offers multiple environmental and societal benefits. Locally grown wood reduces reliance on imported timber and provides a sustainable alternative to materials like steel, concrete, and plastics. The lightweight wood minimizes transportation emissions. This project demonstrates how carbon capture, agriculture, and nature conservation can go hand in hand and serves as an inspiring example for other young people looking to contribute to a sustainable future.
