The Daniel Paulownia Portugal project is a family-driven CO2 removal initiative on a 1.17-hectare property in Sarzedas, Portugal, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and create local opportunities for sustainable timber. On April 9, 2025, 850 Paulownia elongata × fortunei trees were planted, strategically integrated with existing olive, almond, and fruit trees to promote biodiversity and improve soil health. The project is fully certified according to ONCRA standards, with 188 CO2 removal certificates currently available. All proceeds from certificate sales are directly reinvested into the project to fund key improvements, such as upgrading the irrigation system and expanding the plantation.

The project’s management focuses on long-term sustainability and ecological value. The Paulownia trees are managed on a sustainable harvesting cycle, with the first harvest scheduled for 2035 and subsequent harvests every 7 to 8 years. A key feature of this species is its ability to regenerate from its roots after felling, allowing for up to eight harvest cycles without replanting, which significantly enhances its carbon sequestration potential. The long-term vision includes income diversification through products like Paulownia flower-derived honey and ensuring the plantation's resilience with an improved water system.

This initiative is led by the father-daughter team of Fady and Barreca Daniel. Fady Daniel, the landowner, has over 15 years of experience living on his self-sufficient farm in Portugal and provides the essential on-the-ground management and environmental expertise. From the Netherlands, his daughter Barreca handles the project's financial and administrative functions. This collaborative partnership combines their respective strengths, ensuring careful and effective management rooted in a deep, personal connection to the land and a shared passion for creating a positive environmental impact.
