GreenSand's primary goal is to permanently clean up the surplus of atmospheric CO₂ to restore the Earth's natural CO₂ cycle balance. GreenSand utilizes olivine, a naturally occurring mineral, to capture CO₂ from the atmosphere through an enhanced weathering process. When olivine reacts with water, it undergoes a chemical process, similar to rusting, which permanently binds CO₂. The company has developed various products from olivine-rich rocks that serve as sustainable and climate-resistant alternatives to conventional sand and stone applications. These applications include materials for walking paths, parking spaces, garden soil, potting soil, and lime substitutes.n emissions. This project demonstrates how carbon capture, agriculture, and nature conservation can go hand in hand and serves as an inspiring example for other young people looking to contribute to a sustainable future.
Eddy Wijnker, a former sound engineer, founded greenSand in 2009. His inspiration came in 2008 after encountering olivine during an earthquake in China and learning of its CO₂-capturing properties. Motivated by the climate crisis and further guided by Professor Olaf Schuiling, Wijnker established GreenSand to leverage olivine's natural ability to combat climate change, aiming to empower everyone to contribute to a healthier planet.
